Sir Bombalot Questions

  1. Why did one of my pieces die for no reason?

General Questions

1. Missing DPLAYX.DLL

  1. Then you do not have Microsoft DirectX 5.0 or greater installed.  Go to the Microsoft page or the Earth Gaming Inc. web page to get the package.
2. Could Not Create Scene!
  1. This happens when an object file (*.x) or some other necessary component can not be found.  Check the .log file in the same directory as the executable; this file provides in depth information to what file is missing.
  2. Another reason could be that the you have a DirectX version earlier than 5.0.  Again go to the Earth Gaming Inc. web page or click the DX link.
3. Invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL at 014f:bff7297c.
  1. I downloaded and installed this version from your web page, but it will not run.  I have WIN95 4.00.950B installed with DirectX 7.0.  The first chess screen appears and dropdown menus work, but when I click on New to start a game I get this error:
  2. Chess caused an invalid page fault in KERNEL32.DLL at 014f:bff7297c.

HELP!  I have a 200mhz Pentium with 32 meg memory.  Thanks for a quick response, I look forward to playing my 1st game.

  3. Answer:

  4. DirectX has a known problems with some older video card drivers.  This information is carried in Microsoft's Knowledgebase.  I have a STB Nitro 3D video card.  I installed the latest drivers from STB and then ran the DirectX diagnostics program to test its DirectDraw and Direct3D features.

After this procedure ran successfully, I was then able to install EG Chess 1.0.7 and play the game without any further problems.  FYI, I'm using DirectX 7.0.  I don't know if earlier releases have the same problems, but I believe it would be prudent to assume they do.

Hope this information helps other players that might become disenchanted with your games when it is really a requirement for them to have updated drivers.  Thank you for your concern in this matter.  I think it would be nice to have some type of verbage in your requirements list that speaks to this situation.

4. ERROR: Connection failed (player already in game).
  1. You have crashed out and tried to, immediately, log back in.  Wait a couple of minutes for our server to acknowledge your lack of presence.
  2. Someone is using your account.
  3. Someone has the same user name and password as you.  Our initial user name and password generator bases is output on your registration information.  There is a slim chance that two people will be given the same login data.  Your user name and password is delivered to us as well as to you.  We then parse the name and password, check it with our current database and verify to ensure it is unique.  If it isn't we allocate a new user name and password and send that information to you, in the form of email.
5. When I click on a piece it does not spin.
  1. It is not your turn.
  2. Your piece is in the grips of an opponents freezer.
  3. Your piece is in the opponents goal and is no longer accessible.
  4. You are not clicking directly on the 3D piece.
  5. You are clicking on the 3D piece, but the click is not registered by Windows.  The solution is to hold down the left mouse button on the piece and wait for Windows to process the event.  This sometimes happens on slower computers.
  6. The game is over.  Check the status bar to see who won.
6. How exactly does the network play work. My buddy and I have been trying to use the tcp/ip network play and it either hangs for a while or tells us that there are no games available. (Question provided by Matthew A. Tanksley)
  1. The method of network play is not very intuitive. Next version will offer improvements in that area.

  2. For now, however, bring up the network dialog. One person starts the game by clicking on the Connect button and the other joins by specifying a name and a TCP/IP number. Once that is done you can add that number for future reference by clicking the Add button.  Then click the Connect button and the two games should sync up.
7. My problem is not here.
  1. If you experience what seems to be a bug then go to the patch fix page of this game.  If you can not find your bug then please submit it.

Sir Bombalot Questions

8. Why did one of my pieces die for no reason?

  1. It may seem that out of the blue a piece fell for no reason. Usually, a mimic is the root of the mystery.  Mimics imitate the last piece moved when they move and then keep the properties until moved again.  So if a freezer moves and the opposing mimic moves, that piece will retain freezer like properties.  The same goes for every other piece.  Mimics disguised as triggers or bombs are especially dangerous.
